Bluegrass

AgSchmag and hubby came up from Austin for the Bluegrass Festival. Her whacky friend Paulette and her other whacky friend ???? all stayed at Norman and Roxy’s.

Aggie made the most stunning meatballs and penne pasta. The most savory, firm and tasty meatballs I’ve ever had. Turkey. They were turkey. I feel that all of my conceptions about food have gone down the toilet.

Oh. And they had a good time at the festival.

September 11

Today’s the 13th.

I haven’t said anything about the September 11th anniversary. To some extent I am overwhelmed by feeling. I cannot express it all.

I’ve been moved by the few pieces of coverage that I watched. But in general I tried to shelter myself from the sadness.

Jaguar

Warning - Long and boring story follows. Unless you’re a Mac geek, you may want to scroll down to the “Recent Doin’s” entry.

Last week I was forced into buying Mac OSX, codename Jaguar [add dramatic music here.]

My computer could not see the internet router. It could see other machines on the network, and other machines could see the internet. So, it sounds like a configuration or extension problem. 6 hours and reinstalling the network components, no joy.

I decided to reinstall OS9.

I packed up all my stuff, went home, came back the next morning, and found that I had no system disks. In the 12 hours I was gone, gremlins had come and stolen the disks. I spent 2 hours looking for them. Addressed the issue with everyone in the plant. Showed them what the packet of disks looked like, explained the urgency of the situation. The web guy cannot get on the web!

After two hours of panicked frustration, and two trips home just in case, I gave up. I would go to Wichita and get a copy of Jaguar. I didn’t necessarily want to have OSX, but the system came with OS 9.2 for the Classic environment.

I could install just what I needed and boot into OS9.

Some of you are probably laughing up your sleeves right now. OS9 IS NOT in the box. You have to mail away for it. With an extra shipping-and-handling fee to boot.

Luckily, I arrived at my desk, plunked down the OSX box and found my original system disks staring in my face. I’d folded them up into the file folder of networking/IP info for the Courier’s network. If you stood in exactly the right place you could see them. Literally two feet in front of my nose.

Aargh!

The long and the short of it is that, rather than install my original OS9.0 then upgrade to OS9.2, I was still trying to install OS9.2 from the OSX install disks. I couldn’t find an independent installer. So I had to run the OSX installer. And never did find the variation of the installer that installed the classic environment (OS9.) I didn’t find it because it wasn’t there.

Aargh!

I went back to my original disks, reinstalled 9.0 upgraded to 9.2 via 160 MB of downloaded updaters. Everything worked.

Huzah!

Jaguar. Laelee likee. Wahoo!

Work has been generally boring/frustrating lately. Blah, blah, blah.

On the 4th I was contacted by a man who I literally haven’t thought about in 30 years.

Magnus Norström, was an exchange student from Sweden. He was also part of my High School class 20 years ago. I don’t remember him so much as I remember a mutual friends’ mispronunciation of his name. He confirms that that was his name being mangled.

Holy Crap! I find myself considering going to my 20 year reunion. At least I’d like to see a bunch of folk in Ohio that I haven’t seen for almost 10 years.
